Sone China History
Sone China Made in Japan is an export porcelain produced in the second half of the 20th century, mainly for North America, Europe, and the USSR. According to its own leaflet, Sone China was established in 1861 and became one of the largest china manufacturers in Japan. Sone’s operations included a complete production cycle, from clay mining to porcelain manufacturing and global distribution. These capabilities enabled them to produce large volumes of china characterized by high translucency and exceptional print quality.
Sone China Patterns & European Imitation
After the Second World War Japan was temporarily occupied by the US. During that period it was allowed to restore its economy. With that permission they had to mark its porcelain with “Made in occupied Japan” mark. It was exported to US, some of the European countries and USSR.
Japanese porcelain manufacturing advanced over centuries. However, in terms of practical and decorative aspects, there were notable differences with the US and Europe. To meet the demand, they had to adapt their decorating methods to fit local tastes and traditions. This is why Sone porcelain sets may have some references to Japanese roots like pine trees and temples. Though the majority of the porcelain patterns were re-appropriated from existing European designs.
Sone China 3686 is a notable example of European inspiration. Its floral design has strong visual connections to Asian traditions. However, upon closer examination, it becomes clear that it is a well-executed variation of the Coalport pattern known as “Ming Rose”.
Another similar pattern called “Malvern” was produced by Royal Grafton.
Despite the design originated from Europe Sone 3686 porcelain is fine bone china of highest quality. The transfer pattern is very precise and delicate on a closer examination. Golden gilding is executed to the highest standard. Same can be said about the thin china body itself.
